Trades' Maiden Hospital was founded in 1704 by the Trades Incorporations and Mrs Mary Erskine for the maintenance and education of daughters of tradesmen who had fallen into poverty. It was situated on the south side of Argyle Square and could house 23 girls. The school has operated from a variety of sites and was in Rillbank Terrace from 1855-1892, then moved to Grange Loan. Today the charity still operates from Melville Street.
George Watson's College, formerly George Watson's Hospital, was founded in 1741. It was originally situated opposite George Heriot's Hospital, now George Heriot's School, on Lauriston Place. It moved a short way to the west to the Merchant Maiden Hospital building when its original site was taken over by the Royal Infirmary in 1879. The school moved again in 1932 to its current site on Colinton Road.
