Renamed Istanbul in 1923, Constantinople was formerly the capital of the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Turkish Republic. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Western European and American sources often used Constantinople to refer to the metropolis as a whole, but Stamboul to refer to the central parts located on the historic peninsula.
