Description
The wounded are pouring in here & we've plenty of nursing to do.We'll probably be here for some days - but we don't know - the C.O. is awaiting orders from the Divisional Command. It's so odd not to be always hurrying, hurrying on!
We had a proper wash last night - oh the joy of it - but oh the still greater joy, if we could only have a bath! We have no change of clothes with us, only what we stand in - so you can picture the "dye" of them now!
The weather is awful, nothing but rain, & so cold too. This is a beautiful little place standing up above the Danube. The town is built - or rather scattered about on the side of a steep hill. All the house[s] are of mud, most primitive, but inside spotlessly clean. There are dozens of windmills along the top of the hill & they look so picturesque against the sky-line. The colourings are gorgeous, rich autumn tints - the sands, cliffs, houses, hills & roads all seem to be different shades of brown - some dull, some dusty but all brown. The roads are like nothing on earth, such mud & so slippery & skiddery.
The news is slightly better - the enemy have been repulsed
