Description
When we stopped at mid-night & pitched "camp" - our first thought was to collect firewood for a fire to cook the goose! It was cooked "in penny numbers"; every time we stopped a fire was set-a-going & the goose cooked a little more & so on till it was "done to a nicety" - It did taste good, did Mr. Goose. Mud sauce was a change too! You should see us - we're all so weather beaten & brown - or black is it?! - I think so, thanks to the large proportion of dirt we have managed to collect & keep, since starting this "long trail a'winding".
We reached Hirshova about 8 o'cl: the night before last & called a halt just outside the town. The news there was black, black, oh so black - we thought we were "goners" that night. The guns were very loud, & the shells bursting not very far off. The Rumanians seem just to be letting the Bulgars run through their land, the Serbs are practically wiped out & the Russians can hardly be expected to do everything - yet the Rumanians continue to "run away" - I suppose as long as they save their own precious skins little else matters. They are a gallant & a noble army!!
