Description
What a picture! It all seemed so unreal & was more like some ancient biblical picture than just a summer evening in Macedonia in June 1918 & in the midst of war!
Hours off like that, make up for lots of disagreeables & hard work & the daily round of hospital life!

June 16th Verbliani.
It looks rather as if I had forgotten this old diary, but there has not been much to write about of late - nothing but work, work, work! We have been most awfully busy, every bed is full & quite a number of the staff & 21 of the bobnichars (orderlies) have been down with a new plague, which somewhat resembles sand-fly fever. It's a fell disease, whatever it may be, of short duration but "short & sweet" & desperately sudden! It has spread thru' the hospital in an astonishing manner & some of the men have been exceedingly ill. The bobnichars have just gone down like ninepins & we've got a tent full of them - so between patients, orderlies & sick-staff & being terribly short-handed, life has been one great big rush!
The days are becoming unbearably warm now & oh the flies & mosquitoes! The Patter "jing" most persistently at nights now. How I hate sleeping under a mosquito net - but it has to be! I'm hoping for a whole day off soon!
What a picture! It all seemed so unreal & was more like some ancient biblical picture than just a summer...
