March 17th Salonique.
Here we are still - the delay being our equipment. It's annoying having this long wait for it, as we are just longing to get "up country" & started to work. But no use moving up the line minus tents etc:,so we must just await our souls in patience! One thing, it's not "weary waiting", as there are lots of interesting things to do here
& none of us feel the worse of the "slack"! I know I don't!
We've pretty well "been the round" of the churches - St Sophie, St. George's, Demetrius, Twelve Apostles etc: etc: St Sophie is the largest & I suppose, most famous, there is a fine mosaic cupola & some beautiful old pillars with fine relief work in each. It is the church used for public & state functions. The after. we went round the Battlements & to the old prison. The old city wall & ramparts run all along the face of the hill - right up above the Turkish Quarters. The view from the battlements is v. fine; below the old town, the houses coloured blue, mauve, pink & yellow; the narrow, narrow streets & quaint buildings; the ancient churches & shining white & clear in the sunlight, the tall, pointed minarets; & far away the blue, blue sea & countless sea-craft.
The old prison is of interest, but oh, such a dreadful spot! There are still quite number of Turkish prisoners there, who have been in since before the last Turkish war in the Balkans!
One lovely day was spent up at Horliack. It was a big climb, but well worth it - the view from the top of Kotus (the highest point) was
