Description
upright. In cold or rainy weather, all alike envelope themselves in a large, rough capose (cape) made of goat's hair. The women's dress, consists of a long sort of skirt, embroidered & kept in place by a leathern girdle, a short, bright colored, rough home-spun petticoat & in their hair & round their necks they wear strings & strings of coins & beads. The "full-dress" worn by the men is most impressive! It consists of a red fez with a long blue tassel, a richly embroidered blue or red jacket, with "slit open" sleeves, a vest of similar cut, white shirt with v. full sleeves, a white fustanella or kilt, tight-fitting white breeches & stockings& red shoes with "turned-up" toes & a big tassel on each toe-point! I assure you these men like v. fine indeed!
There are hundreds of varieties of native dress, but the above described is amongst the most noticeable. After a rare old tour in the native quarters, we went to see several of the churches - Salonique abounds in ancient churches! The city isoverlooked by an ancient citadel. There is a fine old Roman triumphal arch, a piece of "antique" masonry of particular interest. There is a fine harbour - "safe & roomy" - I suppose after Constantinople that Salonique is the chief trading-place in the "Near East". In biblical days it was known as Thessalonica & under that name, was visited by St. Paul. The whole place is "bulging" with interest & I foresee some interesting days ahead of us exploring, if we are here any length of time! This after. we went for a lovely run round by Horliack - "St. Paul's hill".
