Description
which brings distant objects very close to the beholders & robs shadows of their depth & gloom! The first bit of the railway line after leaving Bralo is an extraordinary piece of engineering - the line is cut through high, rocky mountains & runs along narrow precipices, overlooking deep gorges & mountain passes! Approaching Salonique - across the Vardar Marshes - the country is very flat & uninteresting. Early this morning we passed quite close beside Mt. Olympus - the mystic mountain, of whose top is perpetually snowclad & regarded by the Ancient Greeks as the abode of the gods!
We are at present "resting" at [?] Camp, which is about 3 miles out of the town of Salonique. We are here till our marching orders come - & we all hope for a move on soon.

10th March Salonique.
Yest: afternoon, we spent a jolly after. in Salonique & did a bit of exploring! It is such a fascinating old place, simply chokeful of interest too, & at present, I imagine it is the most cosmopolitan spot on earth. The varieties of uniforms is marvellous - British, French, Italian, Russian, Indian, American & of course Serbs & Greeks & all the different native costumes are intensely interesting & picturesque. The Greek artisan in his short, dark coloured jacket, red vest, baggy trousers of dark green or blue cotton, descending to the knees and the feet encased in buckled shoes, the red fez worn
