Description
snowclad mountains. The first part of the way up from Salonique - as we crossed the Vardau Plain - was most dreary & uninteresting, miles & miles & miles & not a building of any description to be seen anywhere.
There is only one village - small town to be exact! - between us & Salonique, of the name of Yanidza-Vardau, it lies about ½ way. Shortly after getting out of Salonique & just after crossing the Vardau, we saw the old trenches & fortifications of the past Balkan war!
To-day, we've been very busy getting "settled in". We've got a beautiful site for our camp, but unfortunately, we're told on all sides , that later on it will be terribly unhealthy & unbearably hot! However, we may have moved elsewhere by then,
so why be downhearted!? The Serbs - to whom we are attached - wish a Hospital here, as it's on the "direct-route" from the trenches & 15 miles or so down is a rail-head & a big base hospital, to whom we can pass on our patients.
There is a wee stream running thru' our "ground" (commonly known by us as the Pot?k River!!). On one side of the River Pot?k are our Mess Tents - one for Transport, one for Hospital - camp kitchens, garage & store. Across the stream we have all the
hospital tents, 6 large dressing tents, theatre tent, "Linen" tent, dispensary tent, office tent & "workmen's" tent, ie. for carpenting & doing odd jobs like that. Then high up on the hill - over-looking the Hospital - are our own little sleeping "quarters". It is so nice to have our old familiar friends of Russian
