The Military Service Act of 1916 mandated that all unmarried men and widows without child dependents between the ages of 18 and 41 must enlist for military service during the First World War. The Act was revised on 25 May 1916 to include the mandatory enlistment of married men. Mandatory service forced men from vital peacetime occupations; these positions were filled by a call for volunteers from non-essential professions to fill the roles of the men withdrawn from national industries for military service. Forms of Offer were made available at local post offices and the immediate response to volunteer was significant.
