Title
Off to the Land
Description
"To leave two poor ladies helpless with only nine servants because the Country needs thirty thousand Land Women, is that what you call 'patriotic'?"
"The call for man-power was coupled with that for personal economy. There was a general response, but individuals, who seemed to resent the war because it interfered with their personal comfort, evaded all the injunctions issued by the Government, particularly within their own households. In one instance a gentleman, who kept eleven gardeners on his estate, appealed to the Military Service Tribunal, saying that he could not let another man go. Questioned as to the number he had released, he admitted one. Raemaekers in this cartoon satirises a similar sacrificial spirit when it was the turn of the women to make a response to the appeal for Land Women."
