Children's lives were deeply impacted by the First World War. Despite the fact that they were expected to carry on as normal, children said goodbye to their fathers, endured the absence of their mothers as women left their traditional roles at home to take up vacated jobs, and grieved the loss of family and family friends. Regular life and school studies were disrupted and young children were increasingly looked after in nurseries as their mother's took jobs in factories or other industries.
