The sale and production of meat saw severe regulation and rationing during the First World War. The Ministry of Food imposed rations on butchers and set maximum price levels in effort to control the meat supply. Through the food controller, licences were required to be applied for and granted to all dealers, which included importers and sellers in an effort to reduce the number of suppliers and regulate price.
Additionally, the imposed rations were punishable by fine should they be exceeded. A woman in Carmarthen was fined £50 for buying quantities of fresh meat beyond the established mandatory allotment per household and the butcher was fined £20 for aiding and abetting.
