Life for a soldier during the World War One was unlike anything he had experienced before; these men were pulled from their peacetime lives and transported to desolate and battle ruined landscapes and towns. They often spent days, weeks and months outside, without any shelter from the elements. Advancements to artillery and the developments of poison-gas and tanks changed the way war was fought, forcing soldiers into trenches to escape enemy bombardment.
Life on the line was often quiet as men waited for the call to attack. When the call was made, troops went 'up and over' the top of trenches, carrying heavy equipment, while navigating a complex maze of barbed wire, enemy fire, and steep terrain.
