First World War combat extended beyond the battlefields and trenches; air-battles were frequently waged, and British pilots were ever-prepared to defend the coastline against German air-raids. Innovations in airplane design made by Edinburgh and Glasgow-trained engineer Frank Barnwell also changed aerial warfare tactics. Barnwell's agile and quick Bristol Fighter, also known as the Brisfit, allowed British pilots to dogfight with German Gothas with great success.
