Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.

The Grand Canal is the main waterway of Venice which follows a natural channel that traces a reverse S course from San Marco Basilica to Santa Chiara Church and divides the city into two.
