World War one was defined by trench warfare. Fighting men spent their entire lives in these dug-out structures and not only had to fight in them but eat, sleep and rest. In this illustration we see 'Tommies' a nickname for British soldiers resting and playing dominoes in their trench during the Siege of the Aisne.
