The Great British Offensive (also known as the Battle of the Somme) was fought between 1st July and 18th November 1916. The French and British fought the Germans across both sides of the River Somme resulting in over one million casualties and deaths.
The word 'kamerad' in German means comrade and this was what the German troops shouted when they wanted to surrender.
