This soldier is from the 10th Battalion of Gordon Highlanders. Gourlay Trench and Gordon Alley were situated at the village of Martinpuich on the Western Front. There were over 10,000 trenches constructed during the First World War. The trench names were chosen by the troops stationed there and usually reflected the background of the men involved. The image for instance depicts Gordon Alley where the Gordon Highlanders were based.
