This photograph was taken at the Edgcumbe family's private / saluting gun battery at Mount Edgcumbe, looking across the River Tamar to the Royal William Yard, Stonehouse. There is a similar Talbot calotype of the same subject dated c1845. Talbot was related to the Edgcumbe family by marriage, through his half sister. Mount Edgcumbe was in Devon until 1844 when it became part of Cornwall.

Plymouth is a city in Devon, a county in the south-west of England. It has a long maritime and naval history. It is situated at the head of a large natural harbour known as the Plymouth Sound.
