Description
An image of the coast at Joppa Pans, Edinburgh. A group of houses sit on the shore, raised up from the waters edge by a stone wall. The beach is rocky with several large boulders and a man in a flat cap is making his way towards the shoreline. Two people are in a little boat out on the water. A factory chimney can be seen in the distance.

David Thomas Rose was born in the Scottish Borders and brought up in Nairn.
His first job took him to Glasgow in 1896 where he studied in night classes in Glasgow Academy of Art.
Family summer holidays were mostly taken in Scotland. His sister became a eminent obstetrician, working in Edinburgh and the Roses would often stay with her in Joppa or with other family in Fife. While there in 1933 Rose sketched prolifically, especially in the Dean Village and Leith Docks.
Joppa is situated to the east of central Edinburgh on the Firth of Forth. Like its immediate neighbour, Portobello, Joppa was a popular seaside resort. It is now part of Edinburgh.
Portobello developed around a cottage built in the mid 18th century. The sailor who occupied the cottage had fought at Puerto Bello, a port in Panama captured by the British in 1739, and named his home after the battle. With its long beach the town became an increasingly popular leisure destination. It boasted a pier between 1871-1917 and an outdoor swimming pool between 1936-1979. Holidaymakers and day-trippers could also visit the Marine Gardens or the fun fair, both now demolished. The town has been part of Edinburgh since 1896.
