Excerpt from page "Dispensary, Richmond Street - On Monday 10th of July a building for the use of the Public Dispensary of Edinburgh was began in an area in Richmond street feud by the managers of that charity.
Below the foundation stone was deposited a medal on which was engraved a figure of the Goddess of Health with the words "Salus Publica " for a legend on the reverse "Vletidinanum Edinburgenum Conditum Julii 1780" There was also put below the foundation in a glass hermitically sealed a short account of the nature of this charity of which was prefixed the following lines from Mr Pope's Essay on Man.
"In faith and hope to the world will disagree
But all must be false that thwart this one great end
And all of God that bless mankind or mend"
Caledonian Mercury July 15 1780.
