Braemar is a village to the west of Aberdeen. In the 8th century, the Picts were probably the first to build a fort near the site of the present castle. The latter was initially used as a base for hunts, but it gained importance through its strategic location at the link between Aberdeenshire and Perthshire, and the route across the Mounth to Angus. The Castle was burnt down in 1698 by its owner John Farquharson of Inverey, outlawed for murder, to prevent it from being rendered to the government. Finally in government hands, the castle was rebuilt in the middle of the 18th century.
