"Now, father, your turn for the tool, mine for the rifle."

"The growing scarcity of man-power in 1917 made it necessary that a revision of the men employed on national industries and home war services should be made. It was found that a large number of men had gone overseas, in the first rush to the line, who could be better employed at home, thereby releasing younger men. Accordingly protection certificates were withdrawn, and a process of dilution began. Thousands of miners and skilled mechanics were brought home and went to the mines and engineering shops, their places being taken by young men, some of who did not take 'Father's' place with the grace that Raemaekers has depicted. The policy worked well on the whole, and better services were thus received at home and in the line."
