Before war supplies and armies could move across Europe in mass, engineers were needed to develop and construct their means of passage. Roads, railways, bridges, and various communication lines were all built by battalions of engineers. These were dangerous jobs; engineers were vulnerable to attack as they sometimes preceded communication equipment and were often the target of enemy fire.
