James Leslie
was the appointed engineer of the Edinburgh Water Company from 1846. He was the primary partner in the civil engineering firm J & A Leslie and Reid who built the reservoirs of the Moorfoot project in the 1880s. Throughout his long and illustrious career he specialised in projects involving water whether it be as Clerk of Works for Leith Harbour and Docks or as the engineer for the Dundee Water Company before going into practice for himself. His son and business partner
Alexander Leslie C.E.
was the photographer of the images, of which some of the engravings in this volume are based. James Leslie died in Edinburgh in 1889 and is interred at Dean Cemetery.
