Title
Section from Theatres of the East, a Japanese handscroll painting
Description
Section of a handscroll painting depicting the theatre district of Edo, or Tokyo in Japan as it is known today.

A bustling street scene shows many people walking up and down in front of shops. One finely dressed figure rides a horse and is guarded by attendants. One shop displays folding fans for sale whilst another sells rice cakes.
There are balconies above two of the shops where men and women look down on the street below. At the top left a kimono is being hung out to air.
