Description
We waited & waited, till at last, our patience gave out, so off we started across the hills & footed it to Vodena! We went over Table Mountain, and thru' two quaint little villages. These little Macedonian villages contain such extreme varieties of inhabitants & customs! In the Vardar valley the agriculturists seem to be chiefly Turkish & Greek, while beyond Vodena, the Slavs predominate. Greeks are always to be found in the villages, as are Turks. But the confusion of races, languages & sympathies over the whole countryside is most intricate. Slavs, Greeks, Turks, Jews, Albanians, Bulgarians & Serbians, they are all to be found, mixed in the towns & villages.
We approached Vodena by the waterfalls, along by the old town battlement wall & through a fine old churchyard. We both were feeling v. "dry" & weary, so we betook ourselves to the Serbian Hospital & called for Sister H. a friend we know who is nursing there. There we had a good rest & were regaled with cup after cup of delicious tea. We spent about an hour there, then once more to the road! Luck was with us this time, as very soon big car came whizzing along & v. kindly gave us a lift as far as Vertikop. At Vertikop we struck another car, which dropped us at our own road. It's not often we are as lucky!
Such warm days are these!
