Title
Dunotter [Dunnottar]
Description
View of Dunnottar Castle from a valley, through two craggy cliffs. In the foreground sheep and rams graze on a grassy knoll beside a stream. Two cliffs rise up behind the small herd, framing the view of the castle behind. The castle stands on a high cliff of its own, with the tower in full view.
Artist / maker
Skene, James

1815
Size
26.5 x 40 cm

Watercolour
Location
Edinburgh and Scottish Collection
The excellent defensive position of the castle was the main contributer to its successful and long history. There are only two ways to enter and/or exit Dunnnottar Castle. The first is through a very well defended main gate set in a cleft in the rock. The second is through a narrow and precarious rocky path leading to a cave on the north side of the cliff.
