The site of Dunnottar Castle has been occupied since Pictish times, but the visible remains of castle date back to the 15th and 16 centuries. It played a key role in the history of Scotland, with its strategic position meaning that it had control of the main trade route to Northern Scotland. It is an L-plan castle, with key buildings consisting of a tower house dating from the 14th century and a chapel from the 17th century.
