King David (1040-970 BC) of Israel was the father of Solomon, who built the First Temple on this site. David is highly revered by Christians, Jews and Muslims, making this a site of great importance. Since the 12th Century it has been believed that David's tomb lies within the remains of the former Hagia Zion, a Byzantine church on Mount Zion (also known as Temple Mount).
