The bronze statue of Queen Victoria was unveiled by Lord Rosebery on the 12th of October 1907. Plaques on the plinth commemorate the part played by the Leith 5th Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Scots in the Boer War (1900-1902).
Marine Gardens Pleasure Park in Seafield was built in 1909 using some buildings from the Scottish National Exhibition of 1908 at Saughton Park. Many of the buildings were taken over by the army in 1914 and did not reopen as attractions at the end of the war.
