The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This venerable mansion, a residence of the Right Hon. Lord Sinclair, is situated in the parish of Salton, East Lothian.
Part of the house is extremely old, having been at one time a fortified building. About the end of the last century were to be seen vestiges of its former strength. Its battlements, turrets, and fosse were then visible. A modern addition has since been made to the old castle.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
Herdmanston was demolished c1956.
