Water Caddies were common in Edinburgh before private supplies of water were mandatory. They plied their trade by drawing water from the public wells and taking it to private residences for a small fee. These caddies were often soldiers retired through ill health who supplemented their meagre incomes by providing this service. They often wore their red uniforms from days in the Highland Watch and the City Guard and because of this, along with the barrels strapped to their backs and the stooping posture they adopted as a consequence of their burden, were a distinct and noticeable subgroup on the city streets.
