Title
Germany's Colonies
Description
"'If I lose you I lose my future 'U' boat bases.' - Tirpitz."
"Germany set great store by her South African colonies. Herr Dernburg declared that one of the points his Master would insist upon before a Peace was declared was the return of all Germany's colonies. Dr. Solf, the German Colonial Secretary, vouching for his Government's peaceful intentions, on 7th December 1914 announced that Germany was prepared 'to cease hostilities, which the South African Government had forced upon her, provided that the Union Government ceased from hostile action against German territory and evacuated regions already occupied by Union forces.' Germany's railway construction was significant of her 'pacific' intentions. At the artillery depot at Windhock, the German capital of the colony, were collected only worthless gun-carriages and iron hoops, while at Keetmanshoop, near the British border, was an arsenal furnished with huge stores of arms, guns, ammunition, kits, and compressed fodder."
