This photograph documents the first International Forestry Exhibition held in 1884 in the grounds of the former Donaldson's College.
Donaldson's College building is situated on West Coates, close to Haymarket Station in Edinburgh. It was designed by W. H. Playfair and built between 1841 and 1851 with money bequeathed by the publisher Sir James Donaldson. The school was originally intended for the education of poor children with provision for deaf children as well, but the school focused exclusively on the latter group from 1938 onwards. Donaldson's College has moved to a purpose built premises in Linlithgow.
