Melville Drive runs from east to west along the south side of the Meadows. It was opened in 1859 by the then Lord Provost Sir John Melville, for whom it was named.
Marchmont is a residential district in the south of Edinburgh. It lies to the south of the Meadows, and to the west of Sciennes. The land, which formed part of Sir George Warrender's Bruntsfield estate, was feued by him in 1869 for the development of housing. The construction of tenement blocks followed, with the development being largely complete by 1880. The area's street names commemorate members of Sir George Warrender's family. The name Marchmont, by which the whole area has come to be known, refers to Sir George Warrender's wife, the daughter of the 5th Earl of Marchmont. In addition to the area's long-term residents Marchmont is home to many students and young professionals.
