The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This large mansion, the residence of Lady Mary Nisbet Hamilton, is situated in the parish of Stenton, and is, both from its size and the beauty of its surroundings, one of the finest seats in Scotland.
The original building is of great antiquity, but about the beginning of the present century it was considerably enlarged and improved by Mr Hamilton Nisbet of Biel. He obtained a design from Mr Atkinson, architect, and extended the building along the face of the bank on which the original house stood for about five hundred and fifty feet. In seven years a sum of about £40,000 was expended on these alterations. In its present form the house cannot be said to belong to any particular style of architecture, the extensive additions it has received preventing any attempt at unity of design.'
Biel House still stands.
