The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion house of Belton, the residence of James G. Baird Hay, Esq., is situated in the parish and about three miles south-west of the town of Dunbar. It stands, well sheltered, on the banks of Biel water, in a winding glen. Originally it appears to have been a peel tower, to which additions have been made at various times,-the last by the proprietor in 1865. The older part of the building has been so thoroughly incorporated with the new as to be almost indistinguishable, but the vaulted rooms and thick walls on the north side of the house, facing the stream, were evidently built some centuries ago.'
Belton House was demolished in 1967
