This letter to all householders calls on everyone to reduce their consumption of bread. It encourages the wearing of a purple ribbon to show dedication to food economy.
The letter is signed by Lord Devonport, Food Controller. Hudson Kearley (later Viscount Devonport) was a grocer and politician. Appointed Minister of Food Control in 1916, he was the author of the proposal to introduce rationing.
