Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners Banner
Description
One red and blue damask silk banner for the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, with blue border and painted decoration. The title cartouche reads, 'UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL'. Below the inscription the centre panel has a gold border, inside the border are two wood workers working on the same bech. The banner has one red fringe at the bottom.

Almost identical to HH4641, but older. No trace of banner in cash books. Exact description of the emblem in Chandler and John Gorman, Banner Bright: designed by A.J. Waudby; motto "Credo sed caveo" (I believe but I beware; gives explanation of the benefits symbolized by the subjects (Accident, Hundred Pound Benefit, Superannuation, Relief of Widows); the emblem was issued in Dec 1868, India proof copies were supplied at 3s. each and plate paper at 2s.6d. each; the man depicted is James Payne, chairman of the Executive Council in 1862, who was elected B.S. of Camden Town Branch in 1866 and died in 1902; the medallion in the centre has reference to the Emigration Benefit provided but never paid by the union.
