As one of the highest ranking nobleman who signed the Covenant, James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose is the first witness to sign many extant copies of the Covenant. Initially, Montrose was one of the leaders of the Covenanters, and besieged Aberdeen to supress opposition to the cause. However, in 1639, Montrose became increasingly concerned that the hardline Presbyterians leading the Covenanters wanted more than just to curb the King's authority on the church, but were willing to do away with the monarchy altogether. Unable to turn his back on the King, Montrose changed sides and became one of the principal leaders of the Royalist side during the Civil War. Following execution of Charles I in 1649, Montrose continued fighting to bring about the return of Charles II as King. He was eventually defeated by Parliamentarian troops at Carbisadle, and hanged in Edinburgh in May 1650.
