Rev. George Husband Baird

Born in 1761 at Borrowstounness, Dr. Baird was educated first at local parish and grammar schools before entering the University of Edinburgh in 1773, where he distinguished himself - particularly in Greek - and gained the notice of leading professors. Alongside close contemporaries such as Finlayson and Josiah Walker, he pursued advanced studies beyond the formal curriculum, mastering several European languages and benefiting from strong mutual support. His academic merit secured early patronage, leading in 1784 to a tutorship with Colonel Blair’s family, and soon after to his appointment as minister of Dunkeld. Licensed in 1786 and ordained the following year, he served there under the patronage of the Duke of Atholl, educating the Duke’s sons and declining other offers. In 1792 he moved to Edinburgh as minister of New Greyfriars’ and professor of Oriental Languages, later holding successively prominent charges at the New North Church and the High Church, where he served with distinction alongside leading clerical colleagues.
