Description
The Scottish writer, Walter Scott (1771 - 1832), sits with his right hand resting on a stick, his face and eyes slightly turned, looking out of the picture to the right (his left). In the bottom right of the portrait, the head of a dog looks up, and behind him, more faintly drawn, are a curtain and weapons - a sword hilt, and a shield with a sword and a gun strapped onto it.
In the lower right-hand side of the picture are William Nicholson's initials and the date 1817.
