The depiction of Ophelia is closely related to the depiction of women in Crane's earlier career. As she was an iconic subject of Pre-Raphaelite art, it is no surprise that he chose to depict her in that style. Though not a direct relation to John Everett Millais' famous Pre-Raphaelite depiction of Ophelia, the colour of Ophelia's hair and the movement of it do show a nod in that direction.
