"Italy declared war against Austria on 23 May 1915. The German press throughout May had menaced Italy with terrible retribution should she 'treacherously; forsake the Dual Alliance. On 28 May 1915, the German Chancellor in the Reichstag denounced and reproached Italy in a speech of remarkable bitterness."
