The Lily Knight is a perfect reflection of the Rose Knight on the opposite page. The effect when the book is open is much the same as a medieval tapestry, with the thick, dark foliage acting as the background for the battle between the two knights at the climax of the poem. Crane takes medieval textile art and uses it to show current design trends and techniques as well as illustrating a compelling and visually interesting story for children.
