Martin Chuzzlewit was Dickens' sixth novel and written after a self-imposed break from novel writing for a trip to America and Canada.
Sairey Gamp is one of Dickens' more colourful characters. She is a nurse, mid-wife and a 'layer out' of the dead. She is a fat talkative woman who tends to drink.
