Title
Fifty-three stations by two brushes (Sohitsu gojusantsugi). Station 38: Fujikawa
Description
In this print, a woman bends down to attend to the strap of her companion's sandal. She wears a pale blue kimono with a navy floral and spotted pattern that has been fastened with a lilac obi belt. The woman she assists is more elegantly dressed in a purple and white long sleeved (furisode) outerkimono. The textile design of this garment is embellished with kabuki actors' crests. Underneath this garment, she wears a red long sleeved kimono with a chrysanthemum pattern. Her hair is ornately dressed with flowers and red fabric and she wears a black wide brimmed hat (sandogasa) on her head. This young woman has a bamboo walking stick.
The two women may be linked to the characters of Konami and Tonase from the kabuki play, 'Chushingura'. In the play, Konami accompanied by her mother, Tonase, travel along the Tokaido to Kyoto with the shared expectation that Konami will be reunited with Rikiya, her betrothed. Konami is often depicted dressed in a kimono decorated with chrysanthemums, wearing a black hat and carrying a walking stick.
In the background inset, Hiroshige provides a view of the Tokaido as it broadens and passes through a town.
The 'Fujikawa' edition in Hiroshige's Hoeido series portrays a group of station officials bowing to a deputation from the shogun.
