The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This large mansion, the residence of the Right Hon. Lady Ruthven, is situated in the parish of Pencaitland, near the western extremity of the county of Haddington. It was erected about the year 1620, by george, third Earl of Winton & It is said to have been erected by the Earl at the request of his Countess, who had the alternative of an addition to her jointure or a house, when she chose the latter'
